A CAR was destroyed after being engulfed in flames on a main road in Bury.

The woman driver and her two sons had to abandon the Ford Focus in Rochdale Road when smoke began to seep into the vehicle from the dashboard.

Firefighters tackled the blaze but the car was extensively damaged.

Crew manager Karl Grindrod, from Bury Fire Station, said: “The incident started in the dashboard when the woman was travelling on the motorway from Simister. As she came off the M66, smoke started coming through the vents. It got worse and she and the two lads got out the vehicle in Rochdale Road and the next minute the car was on fire.”

Firefighters were at the scene for 40 minutes following the blaze last Wednesday, which caused severe traffic disruption. It is believed an electrical fault was the cause.
