A MAN has undergone spinal surgery after he was injured when his car overturned on the M66 at Ramsbottom on Sunday afternoon.

The 50-year-old driver, from North Yorkshire, who has not been named, was travelling northbound, near to junction one, at 12.50pm when his silver Mercedes left the road and hit a concrete pillar.

The vehicle overturned and came to rest in the first lane of the motorway.

The man was airlifted to Salford Royal Hospital, suffering from serious head and spinal injuries, and he underwent an operation on Tuesday.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: “His condition is described as ‘poorly’ but it is not thought to be life threatening.”

Officers investigating the collision are appealing for witnesses to come forward and call the road policing unit at Whitefield on 0161 856 3572.

The northbound section of the motorway was closed until about 4pm.
