BURY were on the end of a Premier League masterclass at Carrow Road but managed to salvage some pride as they roared back in a crazy finish to this second-round Capital One Cup tie.

First-half goals from former Blackburn defender Martin Olsson and Bolton-born midfielder Anthony Pilkington, plus a debut goal for former Wanderers striker Johan Elmander after the break looked to have finished the match as a contest.

But Anton Forrester headed them back in it 20 minutes from time and while Elmander provided an immediate riposte with his second, a second goal for William Edjenguele 12 minutes from time provided the League Two side some hope.

That was finally dashed five minutes later when Leroy Fer put the tie to bed with a close-range strike and substitute Steven Whittaker ended the home side’s scoring with a sixth on 88 minutes.

Yet the final goal – a rocket from Bury substitute Jessy Reindorf – provided a fitting ending for the thousand Bury fans who made the trip to Norfolk.

It took 20 minutes for Norwich’s pressure and possession to tell, but when it finally did it looked like the floodgates would open much sooner than they did.

Olsson had looked dangerous on the over-lap but opened the scoring on 23 minutes with a shot on the turn from the edge of the box.

While the Shakers had looked fragile up to that point, they visibly wilted as the game was restarted and a flurry of flicks and good movement rendered them mere bystanders.

Wes Hoolahan was the architect of the Norwich second just seven minutes later, playing a neat reverse ball on the edge of the box to set Pilkington free to plant a left-footed strike across goal and into the bottom corner.

Canaries captain Stebastien Bassong then went wide with a header while Robert Snodgrass narrowly missed the target with a snap shot before Bury could muster their first effort on target.

When it came, on 37 minutes, Craig Jones could easily have given the Gigg Lane outfit an unlikely route back into the tie.

Norwich stopper Mark Bunn stood up well to keep out the close range shot at his near post after a great run from Danny Mayor through the middle had set up the rare chance.

Bury started the second half off with real intent, Bunn forced to tip the ball over his bar at full stretch after it had cannoned up off Jones just seconds after the restart.

But Elmander pounced on 51 minutes to put the tie to bed, showing great fleet of foot to flick the ball past the last Bury defender and hammer a shot past Lainton to cap a fine debut for the Canaries.

Then came the crazy finish, with another six goals in a breathtaking final 20 minutes that sent both the Shakers fans and Canaries crowd home happy.
