CAPTAIN Nathan Cameron headed a late winner for Bury to secure another welcome three points in their quest for promotion from League Two.

The 23-year-old centre-back made up for a glaring miss in the first half to convert Chris Hussey’s deep cross at the far post with just nine minutes remaining.

It was enough to see off a determined Accrington side who put the Shakers under serious pressure in the second half.

Bury should have gone into the break two goals to the good after missing a couple of gilt-edged chances in an otherwise uneventful opening 45 minutes.

Cameron had acres of space in the Accrington box as he powered on to an Andrew Tutte corner in the 30th minute, but the centre-back failed to get over the ball and cleared the bar with his effort.

Tutte was then the guilty party 10 minutes later as he scooped a shot over from 12 yards after racing on to an intelligent Danny Nardiello pull-back.

Hallam Hope also snatched at an early opportunity as a Danny Mayor knockdown was worked back to the young striker on the edge of the six-yard box.

New signing Joe Riley was introduced for his debut after half-time, replacing the below-par Kelvin Etuhu.

But the former Bolton Wanderers full-back gave the ball away in a dangerous area with his first touch and Accrington forward Piero Mingoia blasted it just wide of the far post.

That seemed to give the home side hope and they built up a head of steam.

Pope was called upon to block another Mingoia strike, and the Shakers stopper got down bravely to deny Luke Joyce before Shay McCartan forced him into a full length save.

Bury regained a measure of control after matching up Accrington’s 4-2-3-1 formation, following the introduction of attacking midfielder Nicky Adams for Hope.

The substitute almost had an immediate impact, having a goal-bound shot blocked a few yards out before almost getting on the end of a low Hussey cross at the far post.

The visitors dug deep, with both centre-backs picking up bookings as Accrington were reduced to shots from distance in the latter stages.

And after soaking up the pressure, Bury pounced in the 81st minute, with Cameron sneaking in behind the Accrington defence to finish off Hussey’s set-piece.

The young captain’s third goal of the campaign was enough to strengthen the Shakers’ position in the final play-off place as they stretched their run to just one defeat in the last seven matches.
