BURY began their League One return with a draw after a bizarre finish to their season opener at the Keepmoat Stadium.

With Nathan Cameron having received treatment in stoppage time, Doncaster's Harry Forrester restarted play by chipping the ball towards Christian Walton, only for it to sail over the keeper's head and into the Bury net.

The players and coaching staff then got into a heated debate while Forrester protested his innocence and after referee Eddie Ilderton consulted his assistants and each manager, Doncaster allowed Leon Clarke to stroll forward uncontested from the kick-off and tap in an equaliser.

Clarke should have won it before then with the summer signing having missed a host of chances on his Bury debut, twice firing off target while being denied by a fine Thorsten Stuckmann save.

His new strike partner Tom Pope also went close in a dominant first half for Bury, almost bundling in a far-post header from Clarke's cross, yet Doncaster spurned the best chance of the half, Curtis Main sidefooting wide from right in front of Walton's goal.

Clarke also struck the woodwork twice after the break and saw two other shots kept out by Stuckmann. Pope and substitute Jacob Mellis also had shots blocked on the line.

With seven minutes left, the Shakers breathed a sigh of relief as they survived two strong penalty shouts in the space of 30 seconds.

Yet the talking point at the final whistle was that unusual episode in stoppage time, which ultimately saw Bury leave Doncaster with a deserved point.
