BURY bowed out of the Capital One Cup with their heads held high after giving their Premier League visitors a scare at Gigg Lane.

A hat-trick from Leicester debutant Joe Dodoo and first-half strike from Andrej Kramaric flattered Leicester, who were made to work hard for their place in the third round.

Danny Mayor gave Bury hope of an upset, making it 2-1 at the start of the second half, before two late goals for the Foxes killed off the tie.

Bury’s evening started badly when Tom Soares was injured in the warm-up, but the Shakers withheld 25 minutes of pressure from their top-tier’s surprise package.

Argentinian striker Leonardo Ulloa tested the Shakers’ England Under-21s goalkeeper Christian Walton with a low shot in the eighth minute.

Nathan Cameron looked up for the challenge though and the young Bury captain did well to muscle Ulloa off the ball when he looked to have a clear run on goal.

The wave of early pressure, if not meaningful attacks, continued and N’Golo Kante served a warning in the 21st minute when he broke down the left and pulled the ball back for Kramaric to fire another low shot Walton’s way.

It looked only a matter of time before League One’s leakiest defence would succumb to Claudio Ranieri’s Premier League high-flyers, who looked a fluid attacking force despite the Tinkerman making 11 changes.

And 20-year-old Dodoo, thrown in for his debut, took the opportunity to make a name for himself with the 25th-minute opener, scoring with a piece of skill Paul Gascoigne would have been proud of.

The young midfielder took three touches, one to control the ball on the right of the Bury box, one to flick the ball over the head of left-back Chris Hussey and the third to lash it in off the underside of the crossbar.

Dodoo’s piece of brilliance stunned the Gigg Lane crowd, but also stung Bury into action.

Jacob Mellis had the Shakers’ first serious effort on goal in the 30th minute, curling the ball from the edge of the box, but it was easy for Leicester keeper Mark Schwarzer.

But the contest looked over bar the shouting when Leicester went two up five minutes before half time, Kramaric picking his spot in the bottom corner from 20 yards.

David Flitcroft made a double substitution at the break, switching Hallam Hope, who replaced the unfortunate Soares in the starting line-up, with in-form striker Danny Rose and 17-year-old youth graduate Matty Foulds came on for Hussey.

Flitcroft’s show of intent lit a fuse under his players and Mayor drilled home Tom Pope’s knockdown on 50 minutes.

Rose then missed a fantastic opportunity to equalise, pulling a Mellis through-ball across goal.

Bury grew in confidence as the half wore on and they more than matched Leicester in the closing stages without ever quite creating another clear chance to equalise.

Dodoo made certain of the Foxes’ place in the hat with his second goal in the 86th minute, finishing off a break with an angled shot, before adding a fourth for good measure on 90 minutes.
