BURY may have relinquished their unbeaten away record but summer signing Peter Clarke believes the team’s firm foundations mean they are well equipped go on another good run - starting at Shrewsbury on Saturday.

The experienced defender has been a cornerstone of the Shakers’ early season form since arriving on a free transfer from Blackpool.

His partnership with captain Nathan Cameron at the heart of the defence helped add another eight unbeaten matches away from home to the run that started in February.

And despite the setback at Bradford on Tuesday night, the 33-year-old former Huddersfield man is confident the side is strong enough to recover quickly and build towards a possible promotion push.

“There is terrific potential here,” he said. “There is a sprinkling of experienced heads and older players and some very, very good younger players who have got big futures and a real desire to play in a proper environment.

“They are learning all the time and it is terrific to be part of that.

“I can see us over the course of the season moving on and progressing really well.”

Clarke’s partnership with Cameron has been central to Bury’s impressive start to the season, building on promotion to move as high as third on their return to League One.

“We work regularly in training on things and you form relationships,” he said, eager to pass on the experience he has gained over a career that has spanned 572 appearances in all competitions.

“I get on really well with Cam, he is a good lad to play alongside.

“He is a good talker, we bounce off each other quite well and his attributes marry quite well to mine.

“I am loving my football at the minute. It is great, it’s fantastic.

“It is a pleasure playing alongside Nathan. He is a young player with a big future in the game and he’s very receptive to whatever work we are doing, on the training pitch or even if we are just talking football while having our dinner.”

The pair are sure to play a key role in rallying the troops after a disappointing 2-1 defeat in midweek as they prepare to return to Shrewsbury, where Bury lost 5-0 last season in what proved a watershed moment in their promotion campaign.

And Clarke is sure that the confidence they have built through their fine run of results this season will not be shattered by one defeat.

“We believe we are not going to lose on the road, which I think is a fantastic motivational tool for us going into away games,” he said.

“We believe we can go there on Saturday and get a win.

“There has been a record set, now we are just looking to the next game and to carry on our current form this season and on the road over the last few months.

“We are stubborn, well organised, there is a real desire not to lose or concede goals and they are good ingredients for the situation we find ourselves in.”
