BURY continue to suffer from travel sickness after succumbing to a 3-0 defeat at title-contenders Wigan Athletic.

Will Grigg bagged a brace either side of a Ryan Colclough strike inside the opening 20 minutes to condemn the Shakers to their 10th defeat in their last 11 away games.

A depleted Bury side, without skipper Nathan Cameron and top goalscorer Leon Clarke, could have pulled a couple of goals back but were up against an inspired Jussi Jaaskelainen between the Wigan sticks.

Grigg and Max Power rattled the crossbar in the second period for the hosts, whose quick-fire start secured the three points and kept up the pressure on top spot.

David Flitcroft stuck with the same team that were held to a goalless stalemate by Barnsley in midweek.

The Bury boss retained faith in the 4-4-2 formation that saw the Shakers pick up seven points out of nine in the previous three games, all of which were at home.

A mistake from Tom Soares, who was dispossessed on the edge of his own box seven minutes in by Yanic Wildschut, allowed the winger to get to the byline and cross for Grigg to head home.

And two minutes later Colclough doubled the hosts' advantage with a brilliant low shot from 20 yards after cutting in off the right wing.

Ryan Lowe came inches away from halving the deficit with a superb curling shot from the left but it flew narrowly past the far post.

Wigan showed all of their title credentials with a high-intensity, forward-thinking display which was spearheaded by the magnificent Grigg.

The forward bagged his second of the game from the penalty spot in the 22nd minute. After latching on to David Perkins' wonderful pass he was fouled by Bury keeper Ian Lawlor and Grigg picked himself up to slot in the resulting spot kick.

Bury responded to the third goal with attacking intent of their own.

Firstly, Tom Pope headed over from Danny Mayor's left-wing cross, before Mayor's stinging volley from Craig Jones' cross was kept out by a wonderful reaction save by Jaaskelainen.

The former Bolton Wanderers goalkeeper then recovered in time to deny Pope, who attempted to convert the rebound.

Lawlor was called into action one final time before the break to tip over a 20-yard Power free kick that was bending into the top corner.

Flitcroft attempted to bolster his midfield at the break with the introduction of Danny Pugh, with Tom Pope making way.

Jaaskelainen made another wonderful save to deny Lowe five minutes after the restart as he clawed the striker's header off the line following a pin-point cross from Jones.

Wigan forward Grigg, in search of his hat-trick, saw an effort cannon off the crossbar and bounce on the goal-line before Peter Clarke scrambled it clear in the 52nd minute.

Colclough delivered a tantalising cross into the Bury penalty area 20 minutes from time but Power, who was completely unmarked at the back post, could only direct the ball against the crossbar.

Lawlor made a couple of routine stops late on to deny Power but the hosts took their foot off the gas and withdrew key players as they saw the game out.
