NATHAN Cameron has vowed to sort out his act after his position in the back four came under sharp focus following Bury’s recent 1-1 draw at home to AFC Wimbledon.

The 22-year-old central defender slipped in the build-up to the Dons’ equaliser, sparking a rebuke from caretaker boss Ronnie Jepson.

His mistake was highlighted by the temporary manager, and not for the first time this season.

Jepson was also critical of Cameron’s lax marking from set-pieces when fellow strugglers Torquay turned over Bury 3-1 at the JD Stadium at the start of November.

But the young centre back, who signed on a free transfer from Coventry in the summer, says he has taken the criticism on board.

“I’m not going to disagree with him because it is there for everyone to see,” he said.

“The last couple of weeks we have made mistakes individually, myself included, and it hasn’t been good enough at times.

“We just want to work hard for the team and do better. We agree with the manager and are trying to put it right.”

Bury are unbeaten in four League Two matches since that Torquay defeat, but while there is no doubt Cameron and his fellow defenders are making strides in the right direction, he accepts they are still a work in progress.

They twice let a lead slip at Exeter on Saturday, but Cameron did his best to make amends with a goal at the other end, just as he did against Torquay, bringing his tally for the season to three.

“It does prey on your mind a little bit, when you have made a mistake,” he said.

“But I can only speak for myself. I just try to put it to the back of my mind and focus, hopefully getting one down the other end to help out the team.

“Every game we try and go out on the pitch and stay solid, but I still think we need to work harder on the training field.”

On a personal level, Cameron is happy to get a consistent run in the starting line-up for the first time in his career after making just 52 appearances in four seasons at the Ricoh Arena.

“It’s been an eye opener,” he admits.

“I haven’t really played in this league for a whole year yet so it’s been tough physically.

“I didn’t realise the physical demands of the game. The ball’s up in the air and you’ve got to fight for everything.

“These strikers want to score goals, I’m telling you, and will do anything to get them. It is hard work but I’m enjoying playing for Bury and what the club has got to offer.”
