JAMIE HOYLAND: Time for players to focus and perform

ALL of the talk has been about the management in recent weeks but now the spotlight must rightly return to the players.

With the uncertainty behind the scenes now gone it is up to every member of the squad to refocus on the job in hand.

We are coming up to the time of the season where they will have to start getting results and there can be no excuses or scapegoats now – they have to start performing.

I think David Flitcroft’s message to his players in his first week in charge was telling – that if they don’t show the right attitude and ability or buy into his vision then he would be shipping them out.

Key to that, I think, was the appointment of Craig Jones as captain.

It was perhaps an unusual step to give the responsibility to lead the team to a winger or creative player.

But Jones has already shown great determination to force his way into the side after being kept on the sidelines for such a long time under the previous boss Kevin Blackwell.

And Flickers has clearly picked up on that in the short time he has been at the club.

The young lad has a fantastic attitude, as well as good deal of ability, and I think he is a really interesting choice.

On the flip side, Flickers has stripped the captaincy from Andy Procter and left the midfielder on the bench for his first game.

It is up to the manager to make those kinds of decisions – however harsh they may seem.

But the underlying message has to be that it is “my way or the high way” and he has clearly already put his marker down.

I think that is what this group of players has needed – leadership and a dose of stark reality.

While the new manager will want to put his stamp on the club very quickly, the style of football he wants to play will not click into place overnight.

The penny will take time to drop with some of the players and, with others, it may never happen.

But what he will need to put in place is a foundation from which to build.

The attacking side of things will evolve over time, but defensively the side must be tightened up.

Bury need a base from which to build, that’s the main thing, and Flickers will be eager to put that foundation in place.

With Chris Brass on board, and the rest of his coaching team coming together, David’s key focus on the training field over the next few weeks will be working as a team, both defensively as well as attacking.

If they can get that right then results will soon follow.

Well Jamie you have managed yet again to suceed in stating the obvious,it is not earth shattering to expect what the players need to do or indeed to second guess what the manager has been saying to the eqivalent of the dirty dozen,so to speak, actually about two dozen.I can agree with your comments re Craig Jones,he deserves his opportunity and i hope it works out for him.January should be very interesting,a new dimension to the January sales.

An average article which only states the obvious.Just how is David supposed to bring in 3 new players having looked at 60?, then there is the huge squad of 30 players less the loanees which will need new clubs or to have their contracts severed.

I don't quite understand the comment which was made by our new manager with regard to players being re-programmed and the need to change their way of thinking in terms of how they need to change their style of play.

For me a footballer is a footballer he kicks a ball around a park and gets well paid for it.

it's a simple games played by simple individuals with even simpler fans watching from the stands.Don't over complicate things and results will come.

thankyou EX PAT. Thats probably why i find myself agreeing with Jamie so much for the first time in ????
Bottom line though going past the obvious all stated before me. I have gone on and on about the NEED to get to the point we are at now when KB was sacked. OK Mr.Day wasn't going to be rushed. OK he could have said so instead of feeding us a smokescreen of BS to deflect us off him while he decided. Again I say OK, lets move on. We wanted a real manager, and we have one now. Sounds like the type of guy we all mostly want, so he needs the time to get what he has in mind into practice with a squad of players playing his/our way, the Bury FC way. He might fail, there might have been better/other managers like Danny Wilson we either couldn't attract or afford? But the drift and uncertainty is over. The really truly hard work and horrible games and performances truly begin for real but with a plan in place at last. It's now beyond just simply taking it one game at a time. Each game is a lesson to Flits to see what needs fine tuning or changing to get us where we want to be. There are no fans I know who want to have players they want to boo of their own team, but will cheer a limited ability guy leaving his guts on the field for our team. So Flits has a lot of weeding in the garden to do in a very short time of only a few games before JAN 1 and his first real chance to make his first round of changes and adjustments.
I'd be very dissappointed in fans slagging Flits for anything for quite some time now. Whether you wanted him or someone else, he is our manager, we all wanted one long ago. So lets get 100%+ behind it all now. No bluming whispers of I said we should have got__________ instead as our manager.
