DANNY Mayor has been challenged to continue his blistering form at Cheltenham tomorrow as Bury manager David Flitcroft calls for more consistency from his Championship winger.

The on-loan Sheffield Wednesday midfielder showed great composure to slot home a stoppage-time winner at Wimbledon last Saturday.

He then went on to score the opener and lay on two goals for Daniel Nardiello in a man-of-the-match performance in Tuesday night’s 4-1 demolition of Mansfield.

But Flitcroft believes the 22-year-old still has some way to go to prove he has what it takes to translate his undoubted quality to the Championship.

“For Danny Mayor to make it in the Championship, which is his aim, he will be judged on his play in the final third,” said the Bury boss, after watching Mayor double his season’s goal tally for the Shakers in the space of a week.

“To get to where he wants to get to Danny needs a good home; mentors to develop him, and assists and goals, which is something all the top teams want.

“If he gets them in his locker then he’s got a chance of operating in the Championship.

“I have spoken to him about this, that even at our place he is still considered a development player rather than the finished article, but his finishes (against Wimbledon and Mansfield) were Championship quality.”

Mayor was a doubt after struggling with family problems before Tuesday night’s game, but Flitcroft is confident he will be ok for today’s match.

The Shakers boss has hinted, however, that he is hopeful off bringing in another attacker on loan before kick-off after Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro joined fellow forward Ashley Grimes on the treatment table – both with hamstring injuries.

Tom Soares is also a doubt as the attacking midfielder struggles for match fitness following a hamstring strain.

But after going six matches unbeaten, Flitcroft is confident his depleted Bury side can continue their charge up the League Two table.

They moved up five places to 15th position over the past week, jumping two places above today’s opponents.

And after opening up a seven-point cushion over the drop zone, the Shakers manager is now looking to bridge the 10-point gap to the play-off places.

“You have got to win your games to apply pressure to the teams above,” he said.

“I have looked at the teams we have now gone above and sometimes they don’t see it coming – they don’t see a relegation dogfight coming. Now some teams are potentially in one, in freefall.

“Now we have got to keep on driving and look at the next teams we want to try to catch and compete with.”
