PREVIEW: Exeter City academy provides the perfect template for Bury to follow

Bury Times: Regan Walker, who, at this stage, is the only final-year scholar at Bury's academy to have been given a professional contract by the club Regan Walker, who, at this stage, is the only final-year scholar at Bury's academy to have been given a professional contract by the club

PLANNING for next season and the club’s long-term future will be stepped up a notch tomorrow with the visit of Exeter City.

Manager David Flitcroft has highlighted the Devon club’s academy as the perfect template for the JD outfit to follow after admitting serious failings with their current set-up.

The Shakers boss released all but two of the final-year scholars at the club’s academy on Monday, with striker Regan Walker already being handed a pro contract earlier in the season and fellow forward Navid Nasseri kept on for an extended trial.

He will now be picking the brains of Grecians boss Paul Tisdale and their academy manager Simon Hayworth when they visit the JD Stadium tomorrow before developing a long-term plan for Bury’s academy over the summer.

“Exeter have got it right - I think they have got six or seven players in their first-team squad that are homegrown talent,” said Flitcroft, who has had to pick up the pieces of Bury's academy since taking over as manager in December.

“Paul Tisdale had an eight-year plan (when he arrived at Exeter) and on the seventh season he has got kids in (to his first team set-up).

“They have got a fantastic system down there and we are going to try to speak to Paul and Simon Haywood and try to learn from them.”

The Bury boss will go into that meeting with the experience of Monday night still fresh in his mind.

“Monday was a difficult day – it was a tough day. Two of the lads were crying on me,” he revealed.

“You have almost ended some of the lads’ dreams of playing pro football.

“But we will right the wrongs. It’s a school that has failed, without a shadow of a doubt.

"The only way you can do that is by getting new teachers in and start teaching these kids the right way from eight years upwards.

“We will get them physically stronger and we will give them a plan – then it is up to the kids.”

Flitcroft’s focus moved to the future after back-to-back wins over Northampton and Bristol Rovers catapulted Bury up to 12th-place in the League Two table, 10 points clear of the drop zone with six games to play.

Pressing concerns now will be to choose which players to move forward with into the club’s 130th anniversary season, when chairman Stewart Day has already stated he expects them to be pushing for promotion.

Many of the current squad will be out of contract in the summer, including experienced players like goalkeeper Brian Jensen, defender Pablo Mills and striker Clive Platt.

Flitcroft will also have to decide whether to make a move for any of his loan players, with Sheffield Wednesday winger Danny Mayor, Everton striker Hallam Hope and full-back Chris Hussey all possible targets, either on a season-long loan or permanent deals.

But the Bury boss has also made it clear he is keen to promote from within, maybe not this summer but definitely in the future.

“The synergy between the first team and the youth team is probably somewhere this club didn’t really have a plan before I came,” he said.

“We are giving Navid a bit of a trial with the first team, and over the next four to six weeks he will train with us every day, but the rest of the lads have been released.

“I won’t let the first years remaining in the academy down in the same way though. I will make sure we have a plan for them to get pro contracts for next season.”

We were a club that prided ourselves on nurturing future internationals ... Bell, Lindsay, McDermott, Kerr (sadly cut short), Southall, Dixon, Nugent, Kazim Richards ... to name but a few in my memory. Rough diamonds from lower league clubs are getting farther and fewer between now all the top talent is hoovered up by the big name clubs. Its telling that Exeters academy has produced young talent ... and fair play to them ... but they will be lucky to play much above 1st division level. I wish Flicker and the club the best of luck ... but we need to be offering the rough young diamonds of today something that will entice them away from the City's, Uniteds etc. What that is I don't know .... I just hope the club have the answer.
While I'm on ... I do wish the chairman would stop raising everyones hopes by keep banging on about getting promotion next season. We started this season on the crest of a 'Revolution' ... and ended up for the most part gnawing and clawing to keep ourselves out of the relegation zone. Casper showed in the past the folly of 'thinking out loud' ... and was made to look foolish. I'm 100% behind the chairman and manager ... but actions speak louder than words. Go get 'em boys!

I think our chairman has every right to show his ambitions in public but privately he must realise that this club has been through incredibly challenging times of late.

Yes as fans we all want success but it might take longer if the right structure isn't in place below the first team.

I for one would like to see our club nurture talent from our own academy instead of using players from clubs who have good academies of their own.

Stop the short term fixes of bringing in ordinary loan players to beef up the squad instead use them to provide a bit of quality for the first team.

I am sure you would agree that the fact the club "exists" is a miracle.

Am I reading this??
The Man is clueless needs to do some homework.
The club will need to invest in the Academy to get players out of its academy one would think, something they haven't done in 5 years!!!
They get £260000 funded each year as a cat 3 academy of which the club has to match to make it a £400000 academy. They put nothing in, infact they take from the £260000 pot to fund the 1st team and sell the best young players stevie humphrys £75000 this year(he would've played in the 1st team this year)
The academy is one of only a couple to pass the EPPP audit, not rochdale.
The previous academy manager left because club started to run the academy like a junior club, charging kids to play for Bury fc!!
Using the academy money to pay for 1st team players.

That's right we are all entitled to our opinion even if we are out of synch with the majority's views.
I agree with you that our chairman has reaped what he has sown but he must still be a tad disappointed that we have spent most of our season fighting relegation.

Like you I now share your positive optimism about our short term prospects on and off the field.

David has done a fantastic job and well done to the board for backing him.

nding name calling bitter attitude to critique of your conjected posts,as said previously you blow like the wind in all directions, slagging the players manager and board one minute then praising the next.Try to standstill and be consistent, primarily positive even when it is not going well on the pitch, then i might be able to take your posts seriously,in the meantime you are your own worst enemy.

Tbh, i don't really have a problem with that.
If the players are garbage, then in my opinion we have the right to say that. At the same time, if they play well, then they should be praised. For example, i for one am not going to say Jones has played well over the last couple of games, just because the team's won, if fact he's been utter crap but because the team's won he's dodged the bullet. If my view upsets any of you then tough, but imo it's the truth and it's just my opinion. How he continues to be Capt is beyond me and i'll be amazed if he is next season, if Mills is signed up permanently, i think he'll be the journey man to lead us.lol
Ok, over the last few weeks so some of us haven't shown the same confidence in the team as others (me being one), but 3 games ago we were 20th and staring the possibility of relegation from the FL in the face, but we all wanted the same outcome....survival and now we've achieved it and more. I've held my hands up and we'll all move on to the next game.

Anyway, that's exactly what a forum's about, differing opinions and views.

I do think the name calling of My Day is out of order though, as imo he's done nothing but back the manager he's put in charge....if anything it's shown me he's learn't from his mistake when continuing with Blackwell, he waited for the right man and acted swiftly in securing his services.....and look where we are now.

Thats a good post Shackin !!
we all have had reasons to moan for one reason or another but like you i think Jones is never a captain but has tried his heart out while clearly struggling for a bit of form . but form is temporary and class is usually permanent and he has never tried to hide from the ball.
Mcnulty or Mills would be my choice as captain as for Mr Day i think he deserves a big pat on the back from all of us !! yes we know he should have got rid of Blackwell the moment he took over but we all make mistakes and lets be fair Blackwell was the best Bullshitter i have heard for a long long time.
so again well done to Mr Day for not only bringing Flickkers to the club but again allowing him to bring in even more players and yes every one of them have played their part whether we agree or not.
and last but by no means least everyone on here for some good and some bad comments but all of us only want our club to be successful at the end of the day .!!!

Perhaps some folk cannot accept that this is indeed a forum where we are entitled to view our opinions.

Yes some of the players have had indifferent spells throughout this season but it's the boss who is paid to spot the poor performers and keep them on their toes by dropping them.

To be fair to Jonah he has been targeted by other teams every match and gets some pretty harsh treatment,he needs to learn to dish it out as well as taking it.

So why are my comments accepted as being negative by the minority of moronic readers on this site I wonder?
Possibly due to your patronising,condesce

nding name calling bitter attitude to critique of your conjected posts,as said previously you blow like the wind in all directions, slagging the players manager and board one minute then praising the next.Try to standstill and be consistent, primarily positive even when it is not going well on the pitch, then i might be able to take your posts seriously,in the meantime you are your own worst enemy.
Utter rubbish as per usual from someone who cannot tolerate other people's opinions, stick around boyo I enjoy the banter with you.

Utter rubbish as per usual,it's all about opinions so deal with it ex pat,I'm not going to be silenced by you or anyone on this "friedhof" of a forum
Dummy out of the pram again,i can tolerate anyones opinion, however, it appears you cannot so you will just have to deal with it.As a number of postings keep saying --"we are entitled to our opinions"--it is when they are countered these same posters cannot deal with it ----well tough butty.
