FANS across the majority of League One clubs will be able to put their maps and sat navs away this season.

A Football League survey, across all three divisions, revealed this week that the top 10 clubs with the fewest miles to travel were all in the third tier.

That will be music to the ears of Bury supporters, who would have faced one of the longest round trips in League Two this year, if they had not secured promotion.

Instead, they will clock up just 4,556 miles for their 23 away games – the 10th lowest across the three divisions.

That also means that many of the teams travelling to Gigg Lane will be from the region, increasing the possibility of bigger gates.

But while summer signing Peter Clarke is looking forward to sampling the atmosphere at home this season, he does not believe the squad will need any extra motivation.

“There are one or two local derbies and a good spread of clubs from around the North West and not too far away from here in the division, so I am sure we will get fantastic support and have a great atmosphere at Gigg Lane every other week,” said the former Blackpool defender.

“But it doesn’t matter who we play. Personally, I want to win every time I go out there and as a collective - as a team and a squad - we want to be the best we can be.

“If there are more local derbies than there has been previously then, yes, it might add a little bit of extra spice but I don’t think we are going to need a great deal of extra motivation to go out there and be the best we can be.”

It was confirmed this week that Bury will have one extra local encounter after failing to earn a bye in the first round of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

The draw will be made on Saturday for the opening match, which will be played on Tuesday, September 1. Bury will draw one of the following teams from the northern section: Accrington Stanley, Bury, Carlisle United, Morecambe, Oldham Athletic, Port Vale, Shrewsbury Town, Walsall.
