BURY defender Keil O'Brien has agreed a three-month loan deal with National League side Halifax Town.

The 23-year-old centre-back, who has made just one appearance for the Shakers since moving from Chorley in June 2014, will stay at the Shay until January 9.

O'Brien has been plagued by knee injuries in his two seasons at Gigg Lane.

It was hoped he would provide cover in the centre of defence for Nathan Cameron and Peter Clarke and manager David Flitcroft says the move represents an important step forward in his recovery after failing to make the bench so far this campaign.

“This loan will give Keil a fantastic opportunity to have a run of consecutive games after his recent injury setback,” said the Bury boss.

"He has worked extremely hard to get his fitness levels back up and this loan move til January suits all parties.

“Halifax have recruited a good young coach in Darren Kelly and this relationship will allow us to monitor his progress closely.

“With the length of time out we all felt that League One football would be too intense for him. This is the next step for him as he needs gradual progress.”

The 6ft5 defender was a Manchester United graduate and joined Norwich Victoria in 2010.

He has also played for Radcliffe Borough and Mossley.
