CIAN Bolger believes Bury can finish the season on a high following his impressive debut against Shrewsbury on Saturday.

The centre-half linked up with the Shakers on Friday following a loan move from Southend and effortlessly slotted straight into the heart of the defence.

And the 24-year-old has been impressed with his new team-mates, while he also admitted the move came out of the blue.

“It was a bit of a surprise,” he said. “I got a call on Tuesday evening to say that Southend were going to let me come up.

“I had been playing down there. I was left out for one game, there was a conversation had and they said they would let me go.

“There’s a good enough squad here to achieve something towards the end of the season. We don’t want to just rest on our laurels and let the season dry up. We need to keep pushing and believing we can achieve something.”

Despite the shock factor of moving back up north, the former Bolton defender is happy to now be part of the Bury set-up.

“I’m loving it,” he added. “I am enjoying playing football again.

“I wasn’t really happy sitting on the bench so I’m coming up and hopefully can do my best for the boys up here.

“It’s a bit difficult coming in and playing a different system and that, it takes a bit of getting used to.

“Hopefully in the next week we can get some good training under our belt and go into Blackpool full of confidence.

“It’s always a bit nervous walking into a new club but the lads here have been great to me, they’ve been very welcoming. It’s a great squad and it’s been very good coming up.”

Next up is a trip to Blackpool tomorrow and Bolger believes Bury can end their poor away run.

“It’s vital,” he said. “The next week is big. If we can play like we did in the second half (on Saturday) for 90 minutes against Blackpool then we will have nothing to worry about.

“If we go out there and stamp our authority on the game then I think we should pick up three points.”
