BURY have confirmed the signing of former Oxford United forward Chris Maguire on a two-year deal.

Manager Lee Clark said he identified Maguire as a possible target earlier in the summer, before the sale of James Vaughan to Sunderland, believing he could do a job anywhere across the forward line as well as on set-pieces.

The 28-year-old Scotland international sealed the move today on a free transfer after turning down the offer of a contract extension with the Us.

Maguire spent two seasons at Oxford, helping them to promotion from League Two in 2015/16 before scoring 17 goals in 54 appearances in the third tier last season.

The striker has scored 76 times in 380 games over the course of a career that has also seen him turn out for Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership, as well as Derby, Sheffield Wednesday and Rotherham south of the border.

Clark said: "Chris is a player I identified very early in the off-season.

"The chairman and I flew up to his home area in Aberdeen to have talks about the possibility of him coming to Bury.

“He obviously had many offers to consider so we are delighted he has chosen us.

"Chris is a very technical player who has an impressive goal return.

“He can play many positions – as a second striker, a number 10 or in a wide area.

"Set plays are also an area of speciality for Chris. He will complement our other attacking players and I am very excited to be working with him.”

As well as playing in the Championship and League One, Maguire also has two caps for Scotland and was a regular with the Scottish Under-21s.

He is the fourth striker to join Bury over the summer, following Jermaine Beckford, Nicky Ajose and Tom Heardman.

Ryan Lowe is the only front man who remains from last season following the £900,000 sale of top scorer Vaughan and the departures of George Miller and Tom Pope to Middlesbrough and Port Vale, respectively.
