Sedgley Tigers powered their way to a record breaking home win against Bromsgrove in National League Two North on Saturday.

In a one-sided game at Sedgley Park, the Tigers did what they have been threatening to do all season – producing a display of powerful running rugby that was hard to defend against.

After the game, Sedgley manager Geoff Roberts said: “It’s crazy. It’s not easy to get to that sort of score. “We’ve been saying for some time that, just the way we have been playing, that someone was going to cop for it when everything clicked together, and unfortunately it was those guys. “It was one of those all round performances.

"The forwards were all power and pace, all the moves were working for the backs, and again we had really good pace on the wings. I suppose it was really hard to cope with.”

The Tigers scored 12 tries during the course of the match and although Geoff thought the overall performance was a good one, he singled out number 10, Steve Collins for extra praise. “Steve was the man who ran the show and kept everything going. “He kicked all 12 conversions, two penalties and scored a try, so you’d have to say he was the man-of-the-match. “A 35 point win is a big victory in itself, let alone from just one person. I’m not even sure if we have ever had an individual score that many points in a game before.”

After an even opening period, the Tigers roared into action in the third minute with Matt Riley going over for his first try of the afternoon. Collins added the extras, in what would be the start of his 35 point haul.

Jamie Harrison touched down in the eighth minute with Collins converting to give the hosts a 14-0 lead, before Bromsgrove pegged the Tigers back with Thomas Hardwick, going over for an unconverted try.

It was in the final 15 minutes of the first period that the Tigers pounced. Collins kicked two penalties, Richard Wainwright, Riley and Chris Parrott all scored tries and Collins kicked the extras, to take the score to 41-5 at half time. After the break, the ruthless Tigers carried on in the same vain with Bromsgrove having no answer to their constant attacking play.

In a 20 minute spell, the Tigers added a further five tries through substitute James Lloyd, Matt Lamprey, Andrew Riley and a brace from Harrison. Collins again added the extras, taking the score to 76-5.

In the 70th minute, man-of-the-match Collins, scored his try and kicked the conversion before substitute Philip Largan completed the try scoring rout with Collins again adding the conversion, to make the final score 90-5. Geoff is hoping the Tigers can keep their form and good run going when they visit Harrogate on Saturday.

“We can’t afford to underestimate Harrogate. None of the games are easy, especially on their own patch. With Stourbridge playing Darlington this weekend, Geoff is also mindful of what this means for his side’s title ambitions.

“The Stourbridge match will pull one of them much closer to us, but we have to concentrate. There’s no point thinking what we have done against Bromsgrove is brilliant, because we’ve now got to focus on the next one.”
