Bury Broncos 40
Ashton Bears A 10

Bury Broncos extended their unbeaten start to the season to six matches on Saturday with an eight try mauling of Ashton Bears A.

Rick Brogan, Blake Roberts and Andy Carter each crossed for a brace with Adam Radford and Anthony Garside also touching down.

The Broncos built early pressure as they kept Ashton pinned back in their own half. Prop Simon Palin put in the offload to allow Brogan to open the scoring on eight minutes.

Bury’s second try came on 16 minutes as Ashton kicked from deep in their own half and the ball was collected by Roberts.

The full-back weaved his way through the on-rushing defence to score a breakaway try, which he also converted.

Sam Fairhurst powered over from close range to extend his side’s lead before Brogan was sent diving in at the corner after being put through by centre Charlie Delaume. Despite another missed conversion, Bury took a 18-0 lead.

Ant Garside completed the scoring for the first half, showing quick thinking to scoot past a tiring Ashton defence and cross from dummy-half. Neil Shackloth managed to add the extras and give Bury a 24-0 half time advantage.

The Broncos’ dominance continued in the second half. It took just six minutes for the hosts to extend their lead. This time Mike Garside got in on the action as the scrum-half took on the line and produced a superb offload to allow the supporting Carter to barge over for his first of the season.

Ashton scored twice in five minutes, with Rob Smythe and Josh Wofenden scoring to make it 28-10 with 25 minutes remaining.

But any faint hopes of an Ashton comeback were put to bed as Roberts scored his second on the hour.

Carter’s second try rounded off the scoring as Bury cemented second place in the league table.
