DELIGHTED Sedgley Tigers coach Geoff Roberts praised his side's "perfect" performance following their emphatic victory over leaders Hull Ionians.

Despite it being charity day at Park Lane, the Tigers, who have been struggling to repeat last year's form in National League Two North, were in no mood to give the visiting table-toppers an easy game as they stormed to a 38-5 win.

And Roberts believes the victory was nothing more than his side deserved after they dominated the game from start to finish.

"We were absolutely perfect for the full 80 minutes," he told the Bury Times.

"I asked for a performance last week and we got one in abundance.

"I couldn't believe the scoreline.

"They just couldn't handle it. I think they were shell-shocked."

A try from captain Juan Crous and a conversion from Matt Riley gave the Tigers a 7-0 lead at half time.

But a dominant second half display saw the Park Lane outfit secure only their second win in five games with Jamie Harrison, Rob Holloway, Matt Lamprey, Ben Black and Matt Riley all scoring tries in a sensational 25-minute blitz, which also saw Andy Riley kick three conversions.

The shocked visitors did manage to get on the scoresheet with a try from Stephen Slingsby with two minutes remaining following an uncharacteristic error from the Tigers in an otherwise flawless display.

"If we had passed out once more before they scored we would have scored at the other end instead," said Roberts.

"That's probably the one error we did make during the game.

"Apart from that it was fantastic."

Roberts was particularly impressed with his side's "exceptional" team effort as they inflicted only Hull Ionians third defeat of the season - a result which saw the visitors slip to second place behind Ampthill in the race for the title.

"Everyone one of the players put in a performance you would have dreamt of. It didn't stop for the whole match.

"It was an absolutely tremendous performance from the whole 20-man squad.

"You couldn't pick a man-of-the-match because everyone played so well.

"We made all the right decisions, we put 101 per cent effort in and it was exceptional.

"They (Hull Ionians) just couldn't get into the game because we denied them possession. They usually play a big game up front but we just outplayed them in that area.

"It just proves what we can do if we can get all the players in that sort of mood and all focused."

The Tigers coach is now preparing his side for an assault on next year's title, believing he has a team good enough to challenge for the top honours.

"We know the personnel here are good enough to win the league," said Roberts.

"It's about momentum and things working right for us.

"We've failed to do it this year but we know from last year we've got a good enough team to wipe anyone out."

The Tigers travel to third-placed Chester on Saturday with doubts over Billy Emerson (arm) and Jamie Harrison (hamstring) to add to the growing injury list at Park Lane, which also includes long-term absentees George Hymes, Ryan Parkinson and Richard Wainwright.

"Again it's another tough game and it will be tight," said Roberts.

"But after the victory over Hull Ionians we are right back into the mix for third, fourth, fifth and sixth place.

"We shall see how bad the injuries are but hopefully we can patch them up."
