JIM Provett has backed former Gigg Lane loanee Darren Randolph to become a top star.

The Republic of Ireland under-21 international rejoined Charlton a fortnight ago to hand Provett a route back into the first team after spending months on the sidelines.

And though the young keeper did make some high-profile mistakes during his time at Bury, his improvement after coming to terms with regular senior football impressed the Shakers man.

"I think he will go on to have a good career," he said. "I felt as if I could learn from him in training and I hope he learned something from me too.

"I thought Darren responded well after a shaky start. I would never criticise him because we play in the hardest position.

"That's the life of a goalkeeper, it is sometimes about how you react to mistakes."

Provett is also looking forward to this weekend's derby against Rochdale - one of the major reasons he joined the club from Hartlepool in the summer.

"When I talked to Chris Casper in the summer he mentioned that there was six derbies to play in every season. That is the kind of thing that whets your appetite when you are looking to join a new club," he said.

"I think I did well in both games against Rochdale this season and whether I'm looking to get myself a contract here, or open eyes elsewhere, these are the type of games you want to play in."
