Natasha Danvers claimed bronze in the 400 metres hurdles on Wednesday night to boost Britain's bid for a top-four finish in the medals table.

Swimmers Keri-Anne Payne and Cassie Patten launched the day's medals haul with silver and bronze in the open water event, before Bryony Shaw won bronze in the windsurfing RS:X competition.

And late in the evening Danvers secured a second bronze. She was always in contention and kept her nerve to cling on to third place behind Jamaica's Melanie Walker and Sheena Tosta of the USA.

Walker took gold with an impressive new Olympic record of 52.64s.

She powered off the final hurdle to finish comfortably ahead of Tosta, with Danvers putting an injury-plagued season behind her to snatch third.

Danvers was almost caught on the line by the fast-finishing Anastasiya Rabchenyuk of Ukraine and waited for confirmation from the giant scoreboard that she had held on to set a new personal best of 53.84.
