DESPITE the theatrical adage about never working with children or adults, Bolton Catholic Musical & Choral Society has thrown caution to the wind with its next production.

Oliver!not only has a canine role in Bullseye, the psychopathic Bill Sikes’ bull terrier, it also features around 30 youngsters aged between 8 and 16-years-old who play Fagin’s gang of pickpockets.

While BCMCS has already managed to cast the boys, it has launched an appeal to find a dog to play Bullseye.

“Ideally, we want a bull terrier for the role,” said society secretary, Neville Grady.

“It needs to be docile, well-behaved and be able to cope with crowds, noise and music.

“Bullseye is an integral part of the plot and if the dog’s owner wants to appear in our production, then even better.”

Canine candidates will be auditioned during rehearsals and you can guarantee the successful dog - or bitch - will be made a fuss of.

If you have a dog that would love a starring role in the production then please contact Neville Grady on 07732 408369, or email him at bcmcs.secretary@gmail.com.

BCMCS has more reason than usual to look forward to its September production at the Albert Halls.

“A number of years ago we planned to do Oliver!. We had booked the Albert Halls for it but then it needed a big refurbishment so we had to cancel it,” said Mr Grady.

Oliver! will see BCMCS YoutrhTheatre working with the group's adult members.

The youth theatre is for children and young people of ages ranging from 10 to 18 years. It aims to introduce young people to the world of theatre and give them a worthwhile and enjoyable hobby.

The members are led by experienced adults in general stagecraft, acting, singing, movement and dance, and the shows are enhanced by professional music, lighting and sound.

There is no audition to join the Youth Theatre, although auditions are normally held for those interested in taking principal roles in the show.

Another element of the society is BCMCS Choral which has built up an excellent reputation in Bolton for its performances of many classic choral works, since it was founded in 1973.

These include Beethoven`s Missa solemnis, Elgar`s Dream of Gerontius, Handel`s Messiah and Verdi`s Requiem.

At the heart of BCMCS is its musicals section which has been delighting audiences for decades.

If you are interested in joining BCMCS - either backstage or performing - please contact Neville Grady on 07732 408369, or email him at bcmcs.secretary@gmail.com.
