On 30th April Sylvia Lancaster came into school to deliver two assemblies to Years 7, 8 and 9. Sylvia is the Mother of Sophie Lancaster who was beaten to death when she tried to protect her boyfriend from being beaten up for being a ‘goth’ in a park in Bacup six years ago.
A foundation called ‘The Sophie Lancaster Foundation’ was set up to encourage diversity and encourage people to be proud of who they are and celebrate their differences through the story of the murder of Sophie and what has happened since her death. One learner, Caitlin Birnie in Year 7 said “I will never undersand why people won’t accept others for who they are. I am in need of a S.O.P.H.I.E. bracelet.” Mr Aldred said “A very moving, informative talk by a truly inspirational woman—a real eye opener for our learners”. Castlebrook was very pleased to give a donation to the Sophie Lancaster Foundation.
