AN Ainsworth-based martial arts and fitness centre has achieved double glory in a major tournament.

North West Warriors can now boast two champions following the recent WMO (World Martial Arts Organisation) World Championships held in Rugby, Warwickshire.

Paul Smith, who runs the Vale Street centre and is also head instructor, won the kickboxing title in his men's vets 40 years-85kg category while 10-year-old Kian Dodd triumphed in the boys' 12 years and under 25kg kickboxing event.

Paul, aged 44, said: "I was asked to compete after taking more than 12 months out to concentrate on the club. I decided to take the opportunity and got myself ready within five weeks. I trained four times a week with a great mix of cardio, sparring, padwork, strength work and more."

Kian, from Tonge Fold, Bolton, competes on the UK fighting circuit and is a purple belt, already holding a number of titles including Britain champion.

Paul said: "I am over the moon for Kian. He trains hard, listens and applies everything I teach him as head coach. Both of us were ready and in our best shape for the championships.

"We are both delighted with the results."
