BOLTON Metro Swim Squad scooped more than 100 medals when they hosted their annual Winter Sprint Meet.

More than 225 swimmers from a record number of 22 clubs took part in the gala at the town’s Jason Kenny Leisure Centre last month.

There was a great atmosphere poolside at the event, which is organised and run by parent volunteers and officials from Swim Northwest.

Members of Bolton Metro won a host of swims to take home a total of 105 medals – including 34 gold, 33 silver and 18 bronze.

The event, which was watched by a packed viewing gallery, is becoming one of the most popular short course galas in the region.

Head coach Mike Robinson was delighted with the performance of all the swimmers, and especially with a number of the younger squad who improved their personal best times considerably.

“Our gala comes at a time when all swimmers are in the middle of a tough training regime and to perform as they have is a credit to their commitment and determination,” he said.

“The improved commitment shown throughout all our squads and the valuable input from my new coaching team is starting to bring some fantastic results.

“We are now looking forward to the serious part of the season as we prepare for the county, regional and national championships next year.”

Metro chairman Elliott Bostock was also delighted with the success of the gala.

He said: “It was a great event which was enjoyed by all.

“The feedback we have received from the visiting clubs was fantastic and we look forward to hosting more events in 2016. This is a great venue.”

A number of Bolton swimmers claimed multi-gold accolades. There was a high-five for Gabriel Glynn who won the 50m and 100m back, 50m and 100m butterfly and 100m freestyle races in the 12-year age group, while Isaac Brennand also scooped a hat-trick of awards with wins in the 200m individual medley as well as the 50m and 100m breaststroke. Anna Doughty took the 50m and 100m breaststroke, 50m back and 100m butterfly awards in the 15 and over age group.

For the 11-year-olds Jake Reynolds won the 50m and 100m breaststroke, 50m and 100m butterfly and 50m freestyle and Adam Akik also clinched a double for the 13-year-olds in the 50m butterfly and 50m freestyle events.

Emily Barclay posted winning swims in the 50m and 100m freestyle, 50m back and 50m butterfly for the over-15s with Joe Akik victorious in the 50m butterfly, 50m freestyle and 50m breaststroke. Jack Dandy also took the 100m butterfly and 100m freestyle events in the same age group.

Other successes included Lucy Dixon who triumphed in five events to clinch one gold, three silver and one bronze in the 10-year age group and 13-year-old Luka Hyam won five silver medals and one bronze.

Many other swimmers also obtained personal bests and qualifying times for both county and regional events.
