A FAMILY fun day will be held at a primary school to celebrate the courage of a young pupil who is battling leukaemia.

The event for Finley Jarvis will be held at St Saviours school in Stoneclough today. (THURS)

The 10-year-old was first diagnosed with the disease when he was in Year 2, aged seven, and is now in Year 5 with his treatment set to end yesterday. (WEDS)

However his condition has improved and Finley is now in remission.

The fun day was the brainchild of his friends at school, who wanted to celebrate his recovery and raise funds for the Royal Manchester Children's hospital, where he was treated in its oncology ward.

Finley's mum Marie said he had been through a very tough time, and is hoping that the leukaemia does not return in the future.

Mrs Jarvis, from Stoneclough, said: "We first spotted it in March 2013, when he had lumps on his neck and groin, and he was quite unwell at the time.

"He went in for treatment at the Royal Bolton and was then moved to Royal Manchester Children's Hospital. He has had three years of treatment, including chemotherapy, and has missed a lot of school.

"At one point he was like a rag doll, he completely lost his mobility. But he has done a lot of physio and has regained it.

"He is in remission and we just hope it doesn't return."

Helen Kemp, who has been his class teacher in both Year 2 and Year 5, said: "Finley's fun day is an idea from his class friends who have helped and supported through his illness.

"They wanted to do it to raise money for the hospital when he was first diagnosed, however Finley was too ill to enjoy it. We raised money in other ways.

"So now he is in remission we are having a fun day to celebrate the end of his treatment and courage."

The whole school will join with Finley's family to enjoy a range of entertainment including a circus, donkeys, bouncy castle, face painting, ice cream and beat the goalie.
