A MAJOR road in Horwich is set to be improved when a £120,000 resurfacing project gets underway on Monday.

The repairs to Darley Street, which runs between Lord Street and Lever Park Avenue, are expected to take about four weeks.

The road itself will be resurfaced, as well as both pavements.

Councillors have welcomed the scheme, saying it is a busy road used by buses and residents and is in need of improvement.

They said the announcement that work will start has come after months of complaints about the state of the road.

Horwich North East Cllr Kevin McKeon said: "As a ward councillor I have had many enquiries from residents of this street and the wider area asking if repairs could be carried out and complaints about the state of the pavements which are very uneven and have been patched up and are cracked in many places.

"Because this is a narrow street and is used by many buses, it has suffered from many potholes and as a consequence you can see the buses bouncing up and down on the surface as they go along from all of the minor repair works over the years; it is also great news for pedestrians that the pavements will be completely re-done as well."

Cllr McKeon and his other councillors in the ward asked Bolton Council's highways department to consider Darley Street to be considered for investment a few years ago, and the proposal made it into this financial year’s list of maintenance schemes.

The work will cost more than £120,000 and will take around four weeks to complete.

There will be some minor disruption to residents while work take place and Cllr McKeon has urged residents to be patient.

He added: "Please bear with it whilst the resurfacing is underway because once everything is completed, it will be well worth it."
