The fun has begun in the town centre this evening as crowds gather to enjoy Enlighten Bury.

The light and sound festival is lighting up Bury tonight and tomorrow with award-winning light and sound installations.

Families flocked to the town centre to join in on the fun once the sun went down.

The event is a reinvention of Bury Light Night, tying together high quality public art installations alongside an international music programme.

Kay Gardens is lit up by ‘Parabolas’, a UV installation by Hannah Ayre and Amanda Yates. The idea behind the creation was to blur the line between art and mathematics.

By Peel Statue is ‘Lightweight’ by Chris Squire, co-founder and director of Impossible Arts. People gathered to witness the four metre high, 360 degree projection globe mapping people’s pictures, texts and even tweets.

Installations are taking place in various spots around the town centre, as well as a number of musical performances.

‘Poco Apollo’ is a music piece by Icelandic musician Halldór Eldjárn, built upon NASA’s Apollo Space mission photo archive. This will take place in The Met Art Gallery and Museum.

The festival was attended by deputy leader of the Labour party and shadow secretary for digital, culture, media and sport, MP Tom Watson, who is visiting the area with MP James Frith.

Mr Watson said: "The Enlighten Festival, which I didn’t know much about before I came, is something really incredibly special and I hope people get to enjoy it and participate in it because there’s not many places in the country that can do something like that.

"I’m looking at arts policy and provision of arts and I would say that this is top notch, premier league, culture provision."
