ALDI and Lidl stores in Bury will close early on Sunday if England make it to the World Cup final.

The supermarket chains have promised staff that shops will close at 3pm if the team can beat Croatia in Wednesday's semi-final.

The final is set to be held at 4pm meaning staff would be able to get home in time for kickoff.

There are four Aldi stores around Bury, including one in Crostons Retail Park, one on Bell Lane and another two in Whitefield and Prestwich.

In a statement on its Twitter page, Aldi said: "We’re pretty sure it’s coming home right??????? If England reach the World Cup Final we’re gonna close all our stores in England early at 3pm on Sunday 15th July.

"We want our colleagues to be the 12th man cheering on the lads. #BringItHome"

Lidl has two stores, with one in Prestwich and another at Victoria Retail Park, Victoria Street.

In a similar tweet, the company said: "As the *official* supermarket of the England Football team, let's make *this* announcement official... *when* our boys make it to the final this Sunday, it will be early doors across our English stores. #3pmClosing#ItsComingHome."

The news follows England's 2-0 victory against Sweden on Saturday, which puts the side into a World Cup semi-final for the first time since 1990 and only the third time in history.
