RADCLIFFE will puts its best blooms forward for this year’s Royal Horticultural Society gardening competition.

Judges from North West in Bloom will descend on the town today to critique its pristine planters, colourful showpieces and floral features.

Radcliffe in Bloom has this year adopted a recycling theme, linked with the town’s history.

Abbey Close Tenants and Residents Association has been busy preparing its community garden for the RHS visit.

Meanwhile, three giant precinct plastic planters, supplied by Amberol, have sprung up outside Radcliffe Leisure Centre.

Community group Corrie Gardeners has also transformed the Coronation Road area and shops for the competition.

Gingham Park gardeners and Red Bank Extra Care Scheme in Lowe Street have also spruced up their green spaces.

Judge Stephen Lowe, who will be inspecting Radcliffe's blooms, said: "We are really looking forward to coming to Radcliffe.

"I remember the community spirit in Radcliffe being excellent. When the community gets together to improve an area and make it a better place, you see fantastic results.

"It really puts a smile on your face to see the hard work volunteers put in — so many hours, in all weathers, all year round."

Judges will assess quality, sustainability and the overall improvement to the area. They will also consider local heritage and the management of sites.

North West in Bloom is one of 16 regional and national RHS Britain in Bloom contests. Participants who do well could be nominated to take part in the UK finals.
