BOLTON Old Links duo Brian Carroll and Ray Ross won the President’s Trophy when the Manchester and District Golf Captains hosted its President’s Day competition on the duo's home course.

They were actually second to their 14-year-old clubmate Jack Bryan, who stood in as a late substitute, and his partner Ian Doyle, of Reddish Vale.

But as the youngster is not a member of MDGC he and Doyle were awarded the top prize, but the President’s Trophy went to Carroll and Ross.

The Old Links junior captain provided the highlight of the day when he went round in two over gross to help Doyle to a top score of 45 points.

Carroll and Ross were next in with 44 points, and another Bolton club pairing, Dunscar’s John Howard and Ian Bond, won a cpo on 43 from Barry Lucas and Joe Gaffey of Swinton Park, to finish third.

A swirling wind made the golf challenging but there were still plenty of good scores posted from a field of 74 players.

MDGC captain Tony Gregory led off the day partnering Old Links captain Steve Hazlett accompanied by MDGC vice captain Daniel Stone and Old Links past president Duncan Simm at the home club of the MDGC president Ian Brooks.
