A NEW social group for the over 50s has taken off.

More than 30 people turned out to the first ever meeting of the newly formed Ainsworth Social Group.

And for their second meeting, Great Britain Olympian Andrea Holt, from Bury, will be paying the club a visit at their venue, Ainsworth Church and Community Hall.

The former international table tennis star will share her top tips with the group.

Club organiser Laura Ettrick said: "We had a wonderful turn-out last week. It was really fantastic to see such good support for the idea of a social club for the over 50s in the village.

"After a brief introduction we put our heads together to discuss what we all wanted from the club and what we could offer.

"The group's motto is 'Challenge Yourself — some of us were well and truly challenged as we tried to put together our new table tennis table.

"We hope that lots of people will be able to join us at our next meeting when former Olympic table tennis player, Andrea Holt, will be giving us some playing tips.

"It should be good fun, and there will also be games, discussions and refreshments."

The table was built in preparation for Andrea's visit.

More than 30 people attended the first meeting, and enjoyed tea and coffee followed by an assortment of games.

Some of the ideas for future meetings include themes of art, photography, fossils and rocks, family history, wool weaving, walking and exercise, gardening and theatre trips.

At the next meeting, at 7pm on on Tuesday, September 4, sign-up sheets will be available to gauge the amount of interest for each of these ideas.

Visitors are asked to contribute a minimum of £1 to club funds.
