A GOLFER has won perhaps the highest cash prize awarded in amateur golf after hitting a hole in one at a Whitefield club.

Alex Radcliffe, aged 27, from Radcliffe who has been a member of the Stand Golf Club for 13 years achieved the feat on the course's 13th hole.

The hole is sponsored by Burning Desire Fireplace Centre, Ramsbottom, so that any amateur golfer getting a hole in one would receive £1,000.

Mr Radcliffe said: “I was having a bit of a shocker of a round actually. That was my only good shot.

"Everyone has been really chuffed for me – even my Dad, who is also a member at Stand, who could hear me cheering from the 18th.

"I knew that Burning Desire had put the prize on that hole but didn’t know if I qualified for it.

"Thanks to Burning Desire I think I will take the missus away on holiday to celebrate.”

Ben Armstrong, managing director of Burning Desire Fireplace Centre, and a member at Stand Golf Club for over 33 years, said: “We are delighted Alex has won the prize. Not every golfer gets to hit a hole in one during their career let alone win £1,000 for doing so.”
