A SUPERHUMAN runner has taken on a challenge to pound the streets of Britain in a bid to battle arthritis.

Marion Rubins, from Radcliffe, is set to run in the Bury 10k on Sunday and the Royal Parks Half Marathon in London next month — two of four running events she is hoping compete in this year, to fundraise for Arthritis UK.

No stranger to problems with her joints, Ms Rubins suffered significant injuries in a windsurfing accident in Tenerife in August 2012.

The incident left her with a fractured left shoulder humourous and damaged rotator cuff, meaning Ms Rubins could not lift her arm more than half way.

The accident's severity also meant she faced a long recovery after infection and reactions set in, and she now suffers severe arthritis in the joint and other areas.

Ms Rubins is now a Pilates and fitness instructor and says the active nature of her work has helped her get back into driving and teaching and even triathlon by swimming with only one arm.

Arthritis has also affected Ms Rubins niece Emma Yentis, as a side effect of her ulcerative colitis.

Ms Yentis, who lives in London spent most of her university years in pain, however, thanks to treatment injections she also managed to run the Royal Parks Half Marathon for Arthritis UK.

Ms Rubins said: “She inspired me to enter and run with her, although she was faster than me

“I loved the event as I had only ever run 10k maximum before and it was such a challenge. It is iconic and almost surreal running through and past the London landmarks with so many supporters cheering us on all the way round the course.

“I am running for the same charity again this year and my niece, sister, my partner Rob will all be there to support me this year.”

Ms Rubins who celebrated her 60th birthday in May set herself a target to complete the Manchester 10k, Salford Triathlon, Bury 10K and the Royal Parks Half Marathon; and is now half way towards her goal.

She has is also hoping to run the half marathon in under two and a half hours.

A fitness fanatic, when Ms Rubin is not teaching one of her indoor cycling, barefoot functional fitness, Pilates or yoga classes, she can regularly be found running and walking — often with her puppy.
