AN MP has pledged to take into account the views of his constituents when he votes on the outcome of Brexit negotiations.

Ivan Lewis, MP for Bury South, launched a consultation to give residents in his constituency the opportunity to voice their views on the future direction of the country.

So far, more than 600 people have responded and completed his survey.

Ivan Lewis, MP for Bury South, said: "This is the most responses I have ever received on an issue of importance to my constituents and demonstrates the high level of concern which people feel.

"In the weeks ahead I and my parliamentary colleagues will be asked to vote on the outcome of current negotiations. Arguably, the most important peacetime decision we will make about the future of our country. I will take account of the results of this survey when reaching a conclusion on what I believe to be in our national interest. There is still time for people to make me aware of their views.”

Mr Lewis said it was clear from the responses that the divisions evident in the referendum remain 'broadly the same'.

He said: "A significant majority of Remain voters want access to the single market to be the priority, and a Peoples’ Vote on any deal. They are overwhelmingly opposed to leaving the EU without a deal.

"In contrast, the priority of Leave voters is to end free movement and replace it with a points and visa based immigration system. They are willing to accept the UK departing the EU without a deal. They want parliament or the Government to decide next steps, not a peoples’ vote.

"An overwhelming majority of those who responded irrespective of their views were dissatisfied with the way Theresa May has conducted the negotiations with the EU.

"Transparency means it is only right that I acknowledge the survey results were distorted by the fact that 66 per cent of the respondents were people who voted to remain in the EU while only 32 per cent had voted to leave."
