FIRE crews were called after food, left under the grill by a man who fell asleep, filled his flat with smoke.
The incident happened at around 1.30am in a first floor flat in Alfred Street.
It is understood that the man had been drinking alcohol and had put some food on to cook when he fell asleep. The food then set on fire.
Firefighters rescued the man, who was suffering from smoke inhalation, however he refused hospital treatment.
The flat suffered minor smoke damage, contained to the kitchen.
Bury Community Fire Station watch manager Pete Fletcher said: "We were called at about 1.30am to a fire in a first floor flat where it appeared the homeowner had fallen asleep after consuming alcohol, and had left some foodstuff unattended in his grill pan.
"Crews pulled the man to safety, out of the smoke filled flat and put out the fire.
"There was minor smoke damage to the property which was contained to the kitchen.
"The man was suffering from a little bit of smoke inhalation but declined hospital treatment and was happy to go back to bed."
