AS PART of Black History Month the NHS is urging black communities to help save lives by registering as blood and organ donors.

More people from black backgrounds are now giving blood and donating their organs after they have died.

A total of 419 people from black backgrounds in Manchester signed up to give blood in 2017 - almost three times the figure of 2013.

NHS Blood and Transplant needs 40,000 more donors from black African, black Caribbean and mixed heritage backgrounds, as they are more likely to have the Ro blood type which can help people with sickle cell.
