DOZENS of people turned out to a special event to remember the fallen soldiers of the First World War.

St Thomas and St John's Church in Radcliffe was filled with visitors who attended a commemorative service to mark 100 years since the end of the First World War.

Poems and readings were read aloud, and the renowned Affetside Choir led the gathering in three well-known war songs. They opened with Why We Sing, followed by Canon of Peace and Prayer.

There were also performances by bagpiper Darren McGuff and saxophonist Michael Hurst.

Members of the audience stood up for the Last Post which was played from the gallery by Michael Hurst and Maryse Gooderson who said: "The event was well attended and helped raise much-needed funds towards the restoration of the rare historic William Hill organ at the church. A donation was also made to the Royal British Legion.

"The programme during the service covered the four-year period of the First World War, including readings, poems and accounts of real life stories."

The commemorative event helped raise £600 towards the church's organ restoration project, with gift aid adding an extra 25 per cent, and £50 towards the work of the Royal British Legion.

Visitors to the service on October 6 enjoyed a buffet supper during the interval.

The church was adorned with decorations that members of the congregation had produced for the occasion, including a cascade of poppies near the font and a display of crocheted poppies.
