A CARE home invited a lonely widow through its doors to join in with its harvest celebrations.

Worsley Lodge in Worsley Road organised a special event — Silver Sunday — to combat loneliness within the community and increase the happiness and wellbeing of its residents.

Staff at the care home invited a local resident Olive Jones to join them for the annual celebrations. Olive has lived alone for the past nine years after losing her husband. Staff welcome her into the home after hearing that she had been feeling a little lonely.

Sarah Lyon, Home Manager at HC-One’s Worsley Lodge said: "Combining Silver Sunday and the harvest festival gave residents the opportunity to get to know people in the community and to build relationships with each other.

"It was lovely to connect with people living alone in the community and make a difference, even if it is for one day.”

Residents enjoyed tea and cakes, and later the staff team presented Olive with a hamper of food and chocolates.

Staff and residents alike enjoyed live entertainment, and even got up to have a dance during the event on Friday, October 5.

Silver Sunday celebrates older people and helps to combat loneliness, while the harvest sestival celebrates food that is grown and produced on England’s home soil.
