A SCHOOLBOY who was hailed a 'hero' for his actions after he and his father were caught up in a house fire has paid a visit to firefighters who helped save them.

Harry Monaghan woke up to the smell of smoke at his home in Canning Street, Bury, at about 6am on June 17.

And when the youngster opened his door to investigate, he was faced with a cloud of black smoke.

Noticing something was wrong, he rushed to his father's bedroom to wake him up.

The pair then took refuge in the upstairs bedroom and called the fire service.

Firefighters arrived at the terraced house minutes later and dramatically rescued them before putting out the fire.

At the time, Harry, who is a pupil at St Joseph and St Bede RC Primary, said: “I just smelt smoke. I opened my door and checked and saw smoke everywhere.

“I held my breath and banged on my dad’s door."

Last Thursday, the youngster, whose favourite TV show is Fireman Sam, visited Bury Fire Station, where he met firefighters, was shown inside a fire engine, and received a framed photograph of himself with the crew.

Pete Fletcher, watch manager at Bury Fire Station, said: “Harry was incredibly brave on the morning of the incident, he knew something was wrong and woke his father up so they could both get to safety.

“A massive thank you and well done to Harry for his efforts.”
