Two brothers have been remanded in custody after being charged following a car crash which left four people dead, including a 16-month-old boy.

Adnan Ashraf Jarral, 35, died on Friday night along with his son Usman Adnan Jarral and a married couple - Vlasta Dunova, 41, and Miroslav Duna, 50.

They were in a people carrier which was hit by a VW Golf which had been pursued by the police in the Darnall area of Sheffield.

Three other people, including a three-year-old girl, were injured in the crash.

Elliott Bower, 18, appeared at Sheffield Magistrates' Court charged with causing death by dangerous driving and other offences.

He appeared in handcuffs alongside his brother Declan Bower, 23, who is charged with offences including aggravated vehicle taking.

Both men were remanded in custody to appear at Sheffield Crown Court on December 10.

They appeared in the glass-fronted dock for the five-minute hearing dressed in grey t-shirts and tracksuit bottoms and flanked by three uniformed security officers. Both have short, dark hair and sported short beards.

Elliott Bower - who is alleged to have been driving the Golf - was handcuffed to one of the guards.

He waved at friends and family in the public gallery and said "love you" as he was led away.

His brother appeared to have difficulty walking and his left wrist and hand were heavily bandaged.

The brothers, of Harborough Avenue, Sheffield, spoke only to confirm their names, dates of birth and address.

There was no application for bail.

Elliott Bower is charged with four counts of causing death by dangerous driving and three counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

He is also charged with handling stolen goods and possession of cannabis.

Declan Bower is charged with aggravated vehicle taking and death caused by an accident with aggravated factors.

He is also charged with handling stolen goods, two counts of driving while disqualified, two counts of driving without insurance, possession of a bladed article and possession of cannabis.

Police said a 17-year-old boy arrested at the scene in connection with the incident remains in custody.

Detective Chief Inspector Jude Ashmore said on Monday: "This incident and the fact that four people have lost their lives is tragic and understandably highly emotive.

"I would however please urge people to think about the comments they post on social media to enable criminal proceedings to go through the courts unhindered and allow those affected to grieve."

Factory worker Mr Jarral is understood to have been driving the VW people carrier when it was hit by the Golf on Main Road, in Darnall.

He was described by his family as "full of life" and devoted to his children.

His wife Tahreen, 32, was also injured and remains in hospital along with Mr Duna and Mrs Dunova's 22-year-old daughter, Nikola Dunova, and her daughter, Livia Matova, three.

On Sunday, Mr Jarral's uncle, Shafqat Mirza said his nephew was a "humble and polite" man who was extremely proud of his two sons and his stepson.

Mr Mirza said: "It's been absolutely devastating for all of us and all the family."

He said Mr Jarral was originally from Pakistan and his wife was originally from Slovakia. They married a few years ago and she had converted to Islam and changed her name from Erica Kroscenova.

He said the couple had been planning a trip to Mecca at the end of the month.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched an investigation.
