DISCARDED fire-lighters put in a bin caused a blaze at a house in Prestwich.

Crews from Whitefield, Broughton and Blackley were called to a house in Glebelands Road at 12.30 on Sunday morning.

Used fire-lighters had been placed in a bin at the house at around 4pm on Saturday and they smouldered for hours before starting the fire.

The bin was against a double garage which was extensively damaged by the fire.

AS Golf TDI car was also damaged but it, and another car, were moved away from the heat.

Whitefield Fire Station watch manager, Tony Wellock, said: "We spent 90 minutes at the address and used two hose reels and two sets of breathing apparatus.

"Firefighters had to strip the tiles from the garage roof in order to strip back to the timber."

He added:"Woodburning stoves have become very popular and we would remind people not to dispose of fire-lighters or any burnt material in a plastic bin. Instead, they should put it in a metal bin away from fences and buildings."
