THE Rotary Club of Radcliffe is nearing the end of a two-year fundraising effort to help build a well for a community living in poverty.

After learning about the work of Cameroon Catalyst, a student-led international development charity, Rotarians decided to offer their support to its overseas work.

They pledged to raise £5,000 over two years for the project, of which they have managed £4,000 so far.

A gala charity ball will be held at Greenmount Golf Club to help them hit their target.

The Club first heard about Cameroon Catalyst through University of Southampton civil engineering student, Tom Edwards.

His grandfather Mike Edwards, Chair of International Committee whose personal connection with the Rotary Club of Radcliffe dates back to September 1980, said: "My grandson Tom travelled to Cameroon in 2016, and the Club made a donation to his trip.

"He reported back about his work — promoting sustainable development, advising on sourcing suitable sites for wells, and providing design expertise for humanitarian projects — which was really fascinating and prompted the Club to offer further support.

"Whilst the Radcliffe Rotary Club concentrates on local and national causes, we do look to help in the wider world. Rotary allows us to do this — it is a truly international organisation."

A suitable site has been identified for the clean water well in the north of the country, which will be built over the next six months at a cost of between £5,000 and £7,000.

The gala charity ball will be held on Saturday, March 30 at Greenmount Golf Club, frpm 7pm until late.
