A ROUNDERS gala was held in Radcliffe to support a cricket club that is recovering after being targeted by vandals.

About 200 people turned out to the East Lancashire Paper Mill Cricket Club's ground in Croft Lane on Saturday for a knockout tournament.

A total of seven rounders teams from across Bury and Radcliffe took part in the games on Saturday to help raise money for the club, which was hit three times by vandals over the Christmas period.

Kerry Hewart, who runs the East Lancs Paper Mill rounders team, said: "It was an amazing effort.

"The weather wasn't great — it was cold and wet towards the end of the day — but everyone was having a really good laugh and teams were interacting. There was a really nice atmosphere.

"People were able to see for themselves the state that the club is in. I think it helped people to understand what we are going through.

"We have only been in Bury and District Rounders' League for two seasons so to have so many people turn up and support us was overwhelming.

"We want to say a special thank you to Graham Jebb who began organising this as soon as he heard what had happened. This makes us feel really valued."

Mrs Hewart also extended her thanks to the multitude of Radcliffe businesses who donated raffle prizes for the event.

East Lancs Paper Mill Rounders Team congratulated Radcliffe Borough who were the overall winners on the day.

The gala on Saturday afternoon was supported by East Lancs, Openshaw Ladies, Exodus, Radcliffe Borough, MFS.

It is estimated to have raised about £750 for the club, which will go towards vital repairs to the clubhouse.

Graham Jebb, an umpire within the cricket league, and the Referees Secretary for Bury & District Rounders' League, said: "

The East Lancs Paper Mill CC committee will hold a second committee meeting on Tuesday to discuss plans to restore the club.

They hope to fix the ceiling, redecorate the clubhouse and increase security measures.
