PLANS are in the making for a new youth club to serve an area of north Radcliffe.

Coronation Road Youth Committee was set up in November last year to give young people in the town a voice and to help them have their say in the local community.

During their first meetings, visiting teenagers expressed that they wanted to have more influence in decision making.

They have also set about establishing a youth club for seven to 14-year-olds.

The committee is being supported by Corrie Gardeners — a community group working with tenants and residents living in Coronation Gardens, Radcliffe.

Tina Harrison, who is the group lead, said: “The youth forum was the idea of a couple of young people from our estate who want to get things done.

“At their first gathering, the youngsters explained that they want a voice in what is happening in the area. They said they feel neglected and unheard.

“They voiced the need for a youth club and the need to support their peers.”

Their first meeting was attended by Cllrs Jamie Walker and Paul Cropper, local policing teams, Ann Norleigh-Noi, who is based at Radcliffe Hub in Coronation Road, and other individuals offering their support.

Schools in the area will be notified about the committee so that other young people can join and its influence extends.

Cllr Walker said: “I think it’s fantastic that the young people have decided to set up a youth forum.

“As someone who grew up in Radcliffe, I think it is so important for young people to take ownership of the area.

“They have some great ideas about what they would like to change.

“Just under 10 years ago, I helped set up a Youth Action Group in the Coronation Road area so it is great to see more passionate young people take up the mantle and I’m glad to be able to support them.”

The next forum meeting will take place at Trinity Baptist Church, in Westminster Avenue, on Saturday, January 26, between 1.30pm and 3.30pm.
