THIS week in Yester Years we go back to the 1970s to remember a very different looking Warrington town centre.

This shot of Sankey Street not only shows a number of shops with are no longer there, it also shows a road which is no longer there!

Warrington Guardian:

The road was pedestrianised as part of the work to build Golden Square in the 1970s.

Shops pictured in the scene which no longer exist include the Co-op on the corner (which became TJ Hughes), and Woolworths.

Both are currently home to discount shops.

Etam can also be seen further past towards Bridge Street.

The changes in the 1970s were as dramatic as those currently under way on Time Square.

Due to open next year, it will see a new market, cinema, restaurants and council offices.
