AN historic village pub could be demolished and 10 houses built in its place under new plans.

Osborne and Co has come with a scheme to build the homes at the site of the 16th century Raven Inn in Glazebury.

If the scheme is approved by Warrington Borough Council, it would see the three-bedroom homes and mews properties built on the land at Warrington Road.

A planning application submitted to the council says the 'neglected and run-down pub' cannot be developed and that housing would bring the land back into use.

The proposal states: "The site, once a thriving business, has over the past few years declined to a mere trickle of patrons this leaves the business un-sustainable as a commercial venture.

"The current owners have attempted to rejuvenate the premises with various special offers, special entertainment nights to generate renewed interest "in the bar, but to no avail.

"Customers prefer to either drink at home or travel to Culcheth or the other bars in the village."

LOOKING BACK > How many of these old Warrington pubs can you remember?

And the developers say that while the building is old, it is not listed and therefore has little heritage value.

The application concludes: " The demolition of the neglected and run-down Raven Inn provides an opportunity to redesign the frontage to Warrington Road and provides the streetscene with a new feature building with historic links to village life, small aperture windows, tall roofscape and the use of a hexagonal base form and "fascinating internal space for a young family wanting to develop and grow in this part of the village.

It is an old building, circa 16th Century but that in itself does not mean that it should be kept for ever.

"Retaining the building is in any event not an option for viability reasons.

"The new development would bring the site back into active use."
