How clean are Bury's shops? Hygiene ratings of every shop in town revealed

Following on from our special report last week looking at the ratings of the town's takeaways, restaurants, pubs, cafés and hotels, now look at the hygiene practices of the rest of the town's food outlets.

In this first part of our series we look at the hygiene ratings of the town's shops and caterers.

Just one Bury shop, Kashmir Superstore, in Rochdale Road, Bury received the lowest possible rating, indicating ‘urgent improvement necessary’, when inspectors discovered an ‘active infestation of rats’ in September 2017.

The store was subsequently shut and issued with a hygiene emergency prohibition notice. It later reopened and its owner said the problem had been dealt with. However, they are yet to receive another inspection.

The business has declined to comment.

A total of 438 businesses were given a rating of five, 44 were given a rating of four, 21 received a ‘generally satisfactory’ three rating, and six received a rating of two, meaning ‘improvement necessary’. Five businesses received a rating of one.

Each business is given their hygiene rating by the Food Standards Agency when it is inspected by a food safety officer from Bury Council.

Visits from the authority occur at different times and some businesses may be waiting on forthcoming inspections. Some may have changed management or closed in the interim.
