A CYCLIST will be remembered five years on from his death in a hit and run.

Terry Brown, from Great Sankey, was killed after being knocked off his bike on Warrington Road in Bold Heath in the early hours of Tuesday, February 18 2014.

In May the following year, Michael Rollason was jailed for seven years after being found guilty of death by dangerous driving.

The 39-year-old, also from Great Sankey, claimed he thought he had hit a wheelie bin - despite dad-of-three Terry having been wearing a high-vis jacket, and having had a flashing light fitted to his bike.

This bike was found in two pieces on top of a nearby hedge, such was the force of the collision.

A ‘ghost bike’ was later placed at the scene of the crash in North Cheshire Clarion Cycling Club member Terry’s memory, where it remains today.

Now, five years on, he will be remembered by his fellow cyclists with a charity bike ride.

Around 150 North Cheshire Clarion members are expected to take part in a day’s cycling on Sunday, February 24.

A similar event - involving 200km and 160km cycles beginning and ending in Lower Whitley - held in Terry’s memory last year raised £350 for brain injury charity Headway.

Club secretary Neil Shand said: "Terry was one of the stalwarts of the club at the time, and Headway supported his family when he died.

"When it happened we had a minute's silence, and 50 people must have turned up for him on the next ride we organised.

"He was a very popular guy.

"We have a club motto, which is 'we never leave a rider behind' - it's quite poignant."
