BURTONWOOD’S litter problem is reaching an absolutely desperate state according to residents.

Charlotte Turek, a mother of four and resident of the village, moved there with her family because of its rural roads and wildlife, but now says the roads are covered in litter and the wildlife is living among waste.

“It’s a total embarrassment to be honest,” she said.

“It’s a massive problem, not just for me but for the other residents who live here.

“People cut through on their way to the motorway, chucking rubbish out of their windows as they go and there’s a big problem with fly tipping as well.”

The issue of large quantities of rubbish on the streets has also been noticed by Heather Speak, a councillor and former mayor of Fylde Borough Council who is also Charlotte’s mother.

“When my mum comes to visit, she always mentions the rubbish and asks why the council doesn’t do anything about it,” said Charlotte.

“I understand there are massive government cuts but it’s an eyesore and it more of a health and safety risk to leave it as it is.

“Plastic takes over a thousand years to rot, so is the plan just to leave it to do so?

“I think the council wants the residents to go out and clear it themselves, which we might be forced to do if the problem continues, but it shouldn’t be our responsibility,” she said.

According to residents, the streets with the worst rubbish problems are Waters Lane, Mill Lane, Farmers Lane, Tan House Lane and Alder Lane.

Charlotte believes that the rubbish is a blight on the borough and more must be done to tackle the problem.

“It’s extremely contradictory to spend so much money on the Golden Gates to make Warrington a better more appealing place, but the council is happy to leave thousands of plastic bottles, bags and all kinds of rubbish on roads leading in and out of Burtonwood.”
